In the past, VDI (Virtual Desktop) was introduced only to some companies due to reasons such as “it costs a huge amount of money to build an environment” and “telework efforts are not yet in full swing”. However, the progress of telework has spread nationwide in response to the new coronavirus infection. Cost issues are also being resolved with the advent of DaaS, which provides VDI in the cloud. It can be said that the status of efforts by companies involved in VDI has changed significantly over the past year.

For details of the “Survey Report on Virtual Desktop Usage”, refer to the download document.

In August 2020, the Internet Initiative Japan (IIJ) conducted an awareness survey on VDI for both information system administrators and users in order to explore the “now of VDI introduction” of companies. Let’s take a closer look at the white paper that summarizes the survey.

VDI introduction status and trends in adoption methods

IIJ conducted a survey on VDI, targeting 387 information system administrators, 193 VDI users, and a total of 580 people. The first thing that catches the eye is that about half of the companies have already implemented or are considering VDI. As shown in the figure on the right, 32.8% of the total have introduced VDI, and 17.1% of the companies are considering it.

It can be said that corporate awareness of VDI has increased significantly, but there is no doubt that DaaS is behind this. When asked “Please answer the status of your consideration” for 17.1% of companies under consideration, the number of companies considering adopting DaaS has more than tripled compared to that of on-premises.

  • Looking only at the companies whose consideration status is concrete (51.1% of the total), it can be seen that about 80% of the companies are considering DaaS instead of on-premises.

We can see the high expectations for DaaS, but compared to on-premises, DaaS is not without its disadvantages. In the question “Please answer the environmental issues you are using” for companies that have already introduced VDI, the performance issues of DaaS were more prominent than those of on-premises, which had many cost issues. It can be said that it is important to make a careful decision while listening to the voices of actual users when considering the specifics of VDI.

Some excerpts from the results of the survey conducted by IIJ are introduced. The download material analyzes the “now of VDI introduction” from a more diverse perspective, such as whether there are differences in the introduction tendency depending on the size of employees, and what the companies that did not introduce felt as bottlenecks. It will surely be useful information when considering VDI.

IIJ also provides DaaS that solves the “performance issues” that are often gathered by users. In addition to downloading the survey materials, please include them as candidates when considering VDI.
