As a part of docomo 5G smartphones, LG’s new “two-screen” smartphone model has appeared. Its name is “LG VELVET L-52A”. Scheduled to be released after December. The feature of this smartphone is that it can be “two screens” by attaching a case with a screen. It has the same concept as the spring model LG V60 ThinQ 5G.
However, this LG VELVET will also be sold as a smartphone alone (without a case). Even if you do not use two screens, you can purchase it as a thin 5G smartphone with an advanced design at a rather reasonable price in the DoCoMo winter / spring lineup.
The two-screen case is lighter.More practical
The LG VELVET is a 5G smartphone with two faces that can be used as a thin smartphone with a stylish appearance by itself, and becomes a two-screen smartphone when a special case is attached. The velvet-like wave pattern printed on the special case is also elegant.
If you install the two-screen case “LG DUAL SCREEN (dual screen)”, you can comfortably multitask by opening two apps at the same time. For example, it is convenient to use LINE to adjust the schedule on one screen and add it to the calendar on the other screen.
In addition, you can launch game apps on two screens at the same time by customizing your own. With LG VELVET, you can play other games while running a game that is left open on the screen.
In addition, one of the two screens can also be used as a game controller, and any game that supports a Bluetooth controller can be operated. This is a convenient function for playing action games and racing games.
The weight when holding it on two screens tends to be a bottleneck, but a big improvement has been made here. The screen size is the same as the LG V60 ThinQ 5G, but the main body is about 180g, which is about 40g lighter than the LG V60 ThinQ 5G’s about 218g. In addition, with the case attached, it weighs about 309g, which is also a little lighter than the LG V60 ThinQ 5G’s 353g by 40g.
It’s only 40g, but 40g. There will be a considerable difference in usability. The previous model was about the weight of two smartphones with the case attached, but with LG VELVET (depending on the item), it fits in about two paperback books.
The screen size is 6.8 inches together with the main body and the dual screen case. The resolution is the same for Full HD +. However, HDR support is only for the display on the main unit side. The shape is a curved display on the main body side (shape along the left and right), and the case side is a flat type. There is no camera on the case side, but like the main body side, there is a notch at the top.
The charging terminal via the case is a dedicated magnet terminal as in the previous generation. It can be used only with the attached cable, but it is easy to connect and disconnect the power cable with one touch.
Performance is semi-high-end class even in an affordable price range
When I remove the case from the LG VELVET, I get a different impression. A glossy smartphone came out from the body that feels powerful and rugged in a good sense! You can also enjoy the surprise.
The main body is 7.9 mm, which is modest in thickness among 5G smartphones. The curved display that draws an arc on the left and right makes it feel thinner. The upper and lower frames are also modest, but the in-camera notch is slightly larger. The 1,600 pixels and SELPHY (selfie) have a high-resolution in-camera, so it’s unavoidable that it’s a little big.
The organic EL display with good coloring makes it easy to handle both for watching movies and for SNS. It’s a little tall, but it seems like this is just right, considering that you have enough left and right hand parts when you play the movie. The sound of the stereo speakers is also good, and the 3D sound technology, which is an application of TV technology, produces a three-dimensional sound.
Trinocular camera that is strong in the dark
The rear camera has a three-lens configuration with a wide-angle 48 million pixels, an ultra-wide-angle 8 million pixels, and a depth 5 million pixels. Taking advantage of the resolution of the core wide-angle camera, the digital zoom can be magnified up to 10 times. You can clearly shoot even in dark scenes.
It is also a point that you can record a three-dimensional sound with dual microphones. You can record with your smartphone alone, and it also has a dedicated mode for shooting the sound “ASMR” that is comfortable to your ears.
It is a “standard model” that is reasonably priced at DoCoMo, but its performance is semi-high-end. The OS is equipped with Android 10. The chipset is Snapdragon 765G, and the memory is 6GB, which is a standard configuration for a 5G smartphone in 2020. The storage is 128GB, and up to 1TB of microSD can be added.
In addition, it also supports wireless charging, waterproof and dustproof, and Osaifu-Keitai. The main body is waterproof, but the case is not waterproof. By the way, there is no problem in using Osaifu-Keitai even when the case is attached.
If you want a two-screen case, at the time of purchase!
The LG VELVET features a two-screen case, but it can also be purchased separately without a case. In that case, it will be about 20,000 yen cheaper.
However, the case is not sold separately and cannot be purchased separately as a maintenance part (it is possible to send the case alone for repair). There are two colors, Aurora Gray and Aurora White, and there are two sets with and without a case, for a total of four patterns.
If you don’t have a case, it’s attractive as a cheap 5G smartphone, but the limited means of obtaining a two-screen case other than choosing it at the time of purchase seems to be a problem before purchasing.
